A Pictoral Review of 2008 - Part I

Click on the image to view larger version. Originally, the comic above was going to be the first of two pages for the annual holiday letter. It was my intention to weave our activities such as plays, movies, and travels with pictures of friends and family. Like all good intentions, it didn't quite get carried out to the fullest. Part of the challenge was how we documented our lives. Up until August, we used a shared camera and then we got our iPhones and pictures were in multiple places. Then I got busy, went to Italy for my birthday and well, I turned fourty and took inspiration from The Master by Colm Toibin, a great book which most of the quotes on this and the second page are taken.

Here's a quick review:

January - The Castro neighborhood was transformed back to the 70's for filming of the movie "Milk" with Sean Penn. Went out with Mark and Michael and continued our series at the New Conservatory Theater.

February - What a fabulous month! We took ten day trip to the island of Hawaii and Kauai. It was a welcome break and warm. We did a lot of driving on the big island and while we had fewer days, enjoyed the more relaxing island of Kauai.

March - We had a few new adventures. There was the Taste of Yountville, a speakeasy show, Bump and Grind with the Gay Men's Chorus, and of course Easter ... the Sister's of Perpetual Indulgence annual event is always memorable.

April - I took a quick trip to Florida for a conference and spent a weekend with Bev and Dan. They took me to Weeki Waki springs ... mermaids on view!

May - We started to attend events with the Movie Bears, one of which was a showing of the new Indiana Jones at the Castro theater! Great fun.

June - It was a fun month. Lots of friends and lots of fun.

July - Frank's niece Clare visited in July and entertained us with stories of school. Following her visit, the biggest change came when we adopted two boys, Parker and Brody. They have brought a lot of energy to the house.

August - Frank got a little older, ask him for that particular detail. As a surprise a group of use took him to Teatro Zinzanni.

September - This was a big month for me. I turned 40 and Frank and I celebrated with friends in Italy. One week was with the boys in Tuscany followed by a week on the Amalfi coast.

October - This was an odd month. The focus was on the upcoming election andwhether or not Proposition 8 would pass. Halloween was disorganized and John was the one who made an effort this year.

November - An impromptu celebration broke out on Castro street with the announcement of Obama as president. It was a bitter-sweet evening as Prop 8 passed. During the coming month we attended different gatherings and then enjoyed a quiet Thanksgiving dinner with Avis and Marc.

December - The boys have demonstrated an uncanny knack to turn everything in to a plaything. Plants continue to get knocked over ... so a Christmas tree did not go up. They were gracious enough to pose for the Christmas Card. We stayed in town and celebrated Christmas Eve with Marc, Avis, and Ravi, followed by the Gay Men's Chorus at the Castro Theater. The next day, we drove up to Guerneville to celebrate with Chuck and John and friends. I had a little allergic reaction and took a benedril, which mixed poorly with the red wine. I got REALLY sleepy. The meal was fabulous!

We're looking forward to the new year and celebrating Frank's 50th birthday (which is August 16), so you can start planning now!

Happy New Year!
